Fresh off the Spaceship is a new podcast from KEXP telling the story of the Black Constellation, an artist collective with Seattle roots and cosmic reach. It's a 10-part series, an invitation into the music and a journey through the feeling that the Black Constellation evokes. The Constellation is a creative convening of such innovative and varied musical acts as Shabazz Palaces (helmed by Ishmael Butler of Grammy-award winning trio Digable Planets), Stas THEE Boss (formerly of THEESatisfaction), Erik Blood, OCnotes, Porter Ray, JusMoni, and Nicholas Galanin. It also includes visual and literary artists Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes and Nep Sidhu.
Just over ten years ago, Shabazz Palaces released their groundbreaking album, Black Up, the Big Bang of the Black Constellation universe that shook the world of hip-hop. Since then, KEXP has followed the Constellation’s work through live sessions, events, and editorial features, watching it grow from a seed in our Seattle backyard to an entity that moves beyond the stratosphere.
Fresh off the Spaceship will take listeners on an audio journey that connects the stars of the Black Constellation and draws meaning from their art, emphasizing the revolutionary power of communion along the way. The podcast is hosted by Larry Mizell, Jr. — a member of the collective, as well as KEXP's Director of Editorial and host of The Afternoon Show on KEXP — and Martin Douglas, Digital Content Producer and writer behind our local music column, Throwaway Style.
Episodes drop weekly from March 18 to May 27, 2022.
