Review Revue: Alien Sex Fiend - Who's Been Sleeping in My Brain?

The lively 1984 discussion that took place among the KCMU DJ-erati on the cover of the first LP by Alien Sex Fiend might just take the prize for greatest number of words with the least to do with the music at hand. It definitely has the most anagrams I've ever come across in my years of doing this …

Live Review: DeVotchKa with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall 1/12

From smaller clubs like The Crocodile and the Tractor Tavern to the luxurious concert venue of Benaroya Hall. "This is quite a step up from where we started in Seattle," joked Nick Urata, frontman for DeVotchKa, as he stared out at the expansive room, seemingly sold out from floor to third tier bal…

Live Video: Christopher Owens

Christopher Owens is in love with himself. Chrissybaby Forever, his third solo album, finds the former Girls frontman getting back to basics by writing and recording almost entirely alone. Aided by engineer J.J. Wiesler, Owens performed all instruments, only calling in a few friends for backups. As…

Live Video: Ariel Pink

Like a modern-day Frank Zappa, LA-based artist Ariel Pink flirts with many genres of music, often times all in the same song. While on tour for his latest 4AD Records release Pom Pom, Pink and his madcap crew stopped by the KEXP studios to tear through a slew of styles: '80s goth-wave, '70s glam-ro…

Video Roundup: Celebrating Gay Pride

We celebrate gay pride all the time here at KEXP, but every year, at the end of June, the nation honors those who marched in 1970 in remembrance of the police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City. This Sunday, June 29th, Seattle itself celebrates the 40th Anniversary of our own Pride Parades,…

Live Video: Black Lips

It's not so bright Underneath the Rainbow — at least not the way Black Lips tell it — but their seventh LP still has its share of sonic gold. The Atlanta garage-punks continue to sharpen their songwriting with a bluesier take on their sound while losing none of their attitude or swagger. During a r…

Seattle literary and arts magazine, The Monarch Review, is hosting a benefit show for the victims of the Oso mudslide. The event, May 12th at the Tractor Tavern, will feature Mary Lambert, La Luz and Star Anna. All the money raised will go to the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation.

Wednesday Music News

Earlier in the year Poliça released "Tiff", in collaboration with Justin Vernon - and today they have released the dark, claustrophobia-inducing, cinematic video for their already mildly scary song. In the video, which I'll warn you now only becomes more violent from the moment it starts, Channy Le…

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 20th, is Record Store Day. Across the nation, droves of rabid music fans will swarm the remaining brick and mortar music retailers, drawn by the lure of in-store performances, special sales and, most importantly, limited-edition collectibles too numerous to count. My head …
