Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Bottle Rocket" by Working for a Nuclear Free City from their 2016 album, What Do People Do All Day, on Melodic Records.

Working for a Nuclear Free City - Bottle Rocket (MP3)

Abstract and melodic and something all their own, Manchester band Working for a Nuclear Free City is testing the boundaries of modern indie-pop. Instead of looking back in time for their music influences, WFANFC looks ahead while blazing a trail for the next generation of rock musicians. Founding members Phil Kay (a.k.a Dekko) and Gary McClure started the band as a studio project. Once John Kay and Ed Hulme, and later Neil Harris, were added to the roster, WFANFC was ready to go. The band's debut self-titled album dropped in 2006, followed by 2008's Businessmen & Ghosts and the 2010 album Jojo Burger Tempest. The UK outfit's newest release, What Do People Do All Day, is WFANFC's first release in six years - and it couldn't be a better way for the band to make their comeback. The album's first single, "Bottle Rocket", begins with hypnotic and and understated vocals accompanied by wild, distorted guitar and an equally as hypnotic bass line. The song begs the listener to follow along as the song progresses - repetitious and engaging all at the same time.

Working for a Nuclear Free City doesn't have any tour dates scheduled as of right now, but you can look at for any news of future dates on their Facebook page. It really has been a while since their last LPs, but you can revisit the past with their 2007 song "Rocket", which was a KEXP favorite back then:
