With her unique voice and vulnerable lyrics, it's unlikely Wizard Apprentice (aka U.R.L.G.U.R.L, real name Tieraney Carter) will remain invisible much longer.
An independent electronic music producer and self-described "digital folk artist", Carter began making music at the age of 13, telling Tiny Mix Tapes, "I’m from Virginia and West Virginia, and that’s a very alienating, weird place to be a queer person and a black person and any kind of weirdo at all. So I would write songs by myself in my bedroom on a keyboard." Her most recent release, Dig a Pit, was produced here in Seattle with Kenneth M. Piekarski at Weird Signals Studios.
Finding good new music can be a full time job, so let KEXP help! In Our Headphones brings you five song recommendations every Monday, straight from KEXP’s DJs and Music Directors. Join hosts Janice Headley and Isabel Khalili on this never-ending journey of music discovery.
Host Emily Fox and KEXP’s editorial team talk with artists about the stories behind their songs and the experiences that inform their work. Through each conversation, we uncover the humanity behind the music, allowing us to hear it in a whole new way.
