It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News.

It’s that time of year where we hope everyone remembers people need help. They don't need help just because it's the holidays, but the holidays are a great reminder that people are getting cold and hungry and need your support. We wanted to put together some music to remind you to help your friends and to let you know to come out TODAY to our Basic Needs Drive Party taking place right here in the KEXP parking lot here at Dexter and Denny. From 10am-6pm we’ll be hanging out in the lot along with our friends and former CPI partner Teen Feed. We’re asking that members of the KEXP community come out and bring donations for homeless and at risk young adults. We’ll also have experts on hand to answer questions and register at risk youth for healthcare. Caffe Vita donating coffee during the morning hours and Dante’s Inferno Dogs will be in the lot during from 11am until 3pm if you want to eat. KEXP DJs Ashley, Larry Rose, Sean, and Shannon will be providing a soundtrack for the drive by spinning music from the lot throughout the day.

Some basic needs that you can bring when stopping by include:

CoatsHooded sweatshirtsDisposable hand warmersNew mens & women’s underwearBackpacksSleeping bagsWork bootsTravel sized toiletriesBrushes and CombsDeodorantRazorsFeminine products (tampons, pads)First aid suppliesFlashlightsBatteries (AA & AAA)

So come by and hang out while we all provide for a great cause. If you can’t make it out, find out more about the wonderful work being done by Teen Feed by visiting their site and seeing ways that you can help their cause.

And now here are a few song choices to help soundtrack the day...

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From My Friends

Joe Cocker made this Lennon/ McCartney song all his own. His 1969 debut album was even named for the song. A generation of 80’s kids know the Cocker version of the song as the theme music to The Wonder Years. Here is his memorable performance of the song at Woodstock in 1969.

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter

Our next song choice is “Gimme Shelter” from The Rolling Stones. This is the opening song off of their 1969 album, Let It Bleed. This was the final Rolling Stones album to include founding member and guitarist, Brian Jones, who was kicked out of the band in mid 1969 and who later drowned in his pool in July of the same year. “Gimme Shelter” went to #3 on the US Billboard charts and to this day continues to be a staple within their live performances.

Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike

Temple of the Dog were a one off project formed in tribute to the late Andrew Wood, frontman for Seattle’s Mother Love Bone. The members included Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Cornell. The band name was taken from Andrew Wood’s opening lyric of the Mother Love Bone song “Man of Golden Words” off of the 1990 album Apple. Here is the official video for “Hunger Strike”, which was filmed in Discovery Park. It doesn’t get much more Seattle than this...

Honorable Mention:

Bill Withers - Lean on Me

From his third full length album, Still Bill, from 1972. This is probably one of Withers’ most well-known songs.
