As a part of KEXP's Punk Month and leading up to Sonic Reducer's 15th Anniversary Live Show and Broadcast with Mudhoney, Control Test, and Dark Smith on May 4, KEXP's Dr. West is spotlighting punk bands for Song of the Day throughout the entire week.

We're kicking things off this week with Minneapolis post-punk/art rock band Uranium Club, who have been building a fervent cult following over the past four years with their high concept brand of fevered rock. Our Song of the Day, “Grease Monkey,” is a frenzied song about making love to your car.

As we’ve learned through documentaries like 2015’s My Car Is My Lover and Strange Addiction’s episode “Sex With My Car”, apparently it’s a thing that happens!

“She’s warm inside with electrical heat/I found heaven and 50 cents in between the black leather seats,” sings bassist and singer Brendan Wells in the wiry track. Eventually plainly stating why someone might want to take up a romantic relationship with their vehicle: “My car’s got a million holes.” Sure, okay! Fair enough!

The song comes from the band’s latest release, The Cosmo Cleaners, their first since 2016’s All of Them Naturals. Listen to “Grease Monkey” below.
