KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is The Guadaloops on Wednesday, February 27 at 12:30 PM PST / 2:30 PM CST.
The Guadaloops is a Mexican band formed by Franco, Fermín, and Fernando. Their "Neomexicano" sound has its own identity since 2012 and has resigned hip hop in Spanish. The word "guadalupe" and “loops” refers to Guadalupe, the Mexican symbol of folklore; the mother, faith and hope.
They fuse the melodies of popular music in Spanish with features of the American sound, atmospheres that hold repeatable fragments, enriched rhythmic base with danceable cadences, energetic rap, lyrics full of contrast, contemporary urban song, love and, heartbreak. Their last album, La Viuda de 2018, they tell a complete story by musical episodes: "It has a basic concept. The speech is like the soundtrack of a story that only we know about, that of Cornelia and Narciso.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
The Guadaloops: It is a critical moment without doubts, of much flowering and experimentation. In CDMX there are enough spaces and things happening. In the province, it is more limited. Just as there are cities with good venues already consolidated that take time or new places emerging, with the priority of supporting the national scene, you still find places with the minimum infrastructure to be able to give a decent show. Most of the public or outside artists would say that they see CDMX in an aspirational way. I would think it is a transition process. At the same time, that there are many people involved does not mean precisely that it is easy to make this a profitable and long-lasting career. Honestly, it's a mystery.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
I think that there has always been a fascination of the Anglo-Saxons for the Latin only that previously a prejudice prevailed in this respect and now I would think that, at least musically, this idea has vanished. The Hispanic population in the US has also grown steeply in recent decades and its presence has been felt undeniably at the industry level. Fortunately, this is justified and is positive, simply because what the inclusion of Latin rhythms in pop music brings seems to enchant everyone organically.
What three Latin bands would you recommend our listeners and readers check out?

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
The Guadaloops: Es un momento álgido sin dudas, de mucho florecimiento y experimentación. En CDMX hay suficientes espacios y cosas pasando. En provincia, es más limitado. Así como hay ciudades con buenos venues ya consolidados que llevan tiempo o lugares nuevos surgiendo, con la prioridad de apoyar a la escena nacional, sigues encontrando lugares con la mínima infraestructura para poder dar un show decente. La mayoría del público o artistas de fuera diría que ven CDMX de manera aspiracional. Pensaría que es un proceso de transición. Al mismo tiempo, que haya mucha gente involucrada no significa precisamente que es sencillo hacer de esto una carrera redituable y longeva. Sinceramente es una incógnita.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos.
Creo que siempre ha habido una fascinación de los anglosajones por lo latino sólo que antes prevalecía un prejuicio al respecto y ahora pensaría que, al menos musicalmente, esta idea se ha desvanecido. La población hispana en EE.UU ha crecido abruptamente también en las últimas décadas y su presencia se ha hecho sentir innegablemente a nivel de la industria. Afortunadamente esto se justifica y es positivo, sencillamente porque lo que aporta la inclusión de ritmos latinos a la música pop parece encantarle orgánicamente a todo mundo.
