This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Treadin'" by Grynch & Budo, a 2013 single on Fin Records.

Grynch & Budo - Treadin' (MP3)

As they're both Seattle-born hip-hop fanatics, it's a surprise that Grynch and Budo haven't made a record together until now. Having been enamored with hip-hop at a young age, Grynch (John Overlie) has been a local presence since his debut EP in 2008, and has since shared stages with Slug and Nas. The now Brooklyn based Budo (Josh Karp) has spent his musical career as a producer and supporting musician, producing records for fellow Seattlites Macklemore and Grieves. Although Grynch had been featured before on a Budo-produced track, the two musicians combined their talents in earnest for the first time earlier this year for the "Treadin'", a 12" single on local Finn Records. On it, Budo's stabbing, textured beats stack on top of each other as Grynch lays down lyrics about his career progress (or lack thereof), spinning a rich, vulnerable story about the life of an artist who has local success, but is still looking for his big hit (a topic that seems more relevant than ever in the wake of Macklemore's [well-earned] national explosion). Closing every verse with "I'm trying to get ahead still/I need to hop off of this treadmill" over Budo's grinding beat, Grynch amply displays that he has the talent and drive to break onto a bigger stage, but as he notes in the song, he's about one occasion away of being in the right place at the right time for the break he's looking for. When it comes though, it will only solidify why Seattle has so many marquee names in hip-hop at the moment.

Grynch and Budo performed together recently on the Morning Show with John Richards. You can listen to that session here, and you can catch more of Grynch here and Budo here. Look for video of their session on KEXP soon. For now, watch Grynch's video for "All I Wanna Do (ft. Sol)" below:

Live Video: The Cave Singers

Few band names are as apt as The Cave Singers. Not quite a folk band and definitely not your typical indie rock band, The Cave Singers seem to have hatched their sound in seclusion, as if alone amid darkness and firelight. Their songs are rustic in style but not necessarily in execution, airy but a…

How is walking through the woods on a foggy, chilly late spring day similar to strolling past the closed fun houses and ferris wheels on a boardwalk at the end of summer?
