Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Dreams of Cannibalism” by Typhoon from the 2013 album White Lighter on Roll Call.

Typhoon – Dreams of Cannibalism (MP3)

Formed in 2005 in Salem, Oregon, the 11-piece band Typhoon, now residing in Portland, has already amassed a number of accolades. In 2010, the band was voted number two on Willamette Week’s list of top PDX bands. Their songs, which involve intricate instrumentation and much rising and falling, have been featured on SyFy Network and NBC television programs. And, though the songs center around lead singer Kyle Morton's personal triumphs and travails, each of the near-dozen other bandmates contribute play an integral part in the band and all contribute vocals. Plus, with four LPs, two EPs and a 7" already in the bag, the band is as prolific as it is large. “Dreams of Cannibalism” weaves the feel of a number of styles of songwriting. It opens with big, bright horns, which disappear into heavy-yet-jaunty pianos. The music is accentuated by Morton, who sounds like he belonged on the Garden State soundtrack. The piece ends with gang vocals, boisterous drums and more horns. There is not a moment of performative weakness in the 3-minute track.

Having just released their newest full-length, White Lighter, Typhoon is currently on tour, recently playing dates in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The group has an upcomming Oct. 6 gig scheduled in Austin, TX and an Oct. 9 show planned for Dallas. For more information, check their website and Facebook page.
