As a member of Icelandic trio Kælan Mikla, vocalist/keyboardist Sólveig Matthildur knows her way around atmospheric synth-pop. When she relocated from her hometown of Reykjavík to Berlin, she began to produce music on her own, resulting in the 2016 debut LP Unexplained Miseries & the Acceptance of Sorrow, which went on to win the Icelandic Kraumur Award. Her 2019 follow-up album, Constantly in Love, continued to expand on her goth-tinged new wave, adding a little light to the darkness with the single "Dystopian Boy."
The track features L.A.-based artist Deb Demure (aka Drab Majesty) on guitar, and together they craft an ethereal, '80s-inspired track that would fit right into a John Hughes movie. Matthildur gives the story of the song's inception via a press release:
I was inspired to make the track "Dystopian Boy" when I was sitting at a bar with a guy one and a half years ago. He said "I'm a dystopian guy, Sólveig," and I thought it was very beautiful as I have always seen myself as a utopian girl. We ended up giving each other a lot. He helped me understand so many things about myself and changed my view of life and love and find the beauty of the fact that everything has a beginning and an end. I asked my friend Andrew [a.k.a. Deb Demure of Drab Majesty] to contribute to the track because I felt like he could really make magic. I was right!
