Kele Okereke has shaken the music industry with his feverish songwriting since Bloc Party came out with their momentous debut Silent Alarm in 2005. As that band has continued to reinvent itself and tread new territory, Okereke has done the same with his solo work.
His latest album under the Kele moniker, 2042, finds the songwriting addressing and condemning institutional racism he’s seen running rampant in a post-Brexit United Kingdom. With the single “Between Me and My Maker,” he approaches these ideas through a lens of spirituality, waxing poetic on the hereafter and and pleading with an omniscient creator through sublime autotune effects.
