Hanssen is the alias of human person Brit Hansen, who for many years before making solo work under that moniker, tore up the underground dancefloors of Seattle's rave and industrial scene with Dave Pezzner in a beloved collaborative project known as Jacob London. Our song of the day, "Subduction (Continental Version)," comes from Hanssen's bold 2016 sophomore album, Transit, released via local electronic label Hush Hush Records. Last year, Hanssen told KEXP in our Local Artist Spotlight of her about Transit: "I have a hard time with making my music 'about' anything, but that album was definitely written over a period of pretty intense change in my life. I had just come out to myself as transgender and was in the early stages of unpacking that and sorting it out. Along with that came a lot of reflection on authenticity, which definitely involved my creative process." You can find Hanssen performing at a number of places over the summer, including a live set at the W Hotel on Friday, June 29, a DJ set at Timbre Room on Saturday July 14, or for Northwest Film Forum's SoundOptica, which takes place in tangent with Capitol Hill Block Party on Sunday, July 22 for an audio-visual experience.
