Celebrating 27 Years of Digable Planets' Blowout Comb

On October 18, 1994, hip-hop trio Digable Planets released their sophomore full-length Blowout Comb, a commercial failure at the time, but a critical success that has found the album gaining acclaim, influence, and a growing cult following as the years go by.

On October 18, 2021, KEXP DJ Larry Mizell, Jr. paid triute to the LP on The Afternoon Show by breaking down its samples. As he noted on the real-time playlist, Blowout Comb "showcased what jazz-influenced hip-hop could sound like during a time of boundless creativity in the genre." Long Songs on the Longest Day of the Year

Friday, June 21, 2019 was the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. KEXP dedicated the daylight time to celebrating beauty and joy of a declining trend: long songs. All day, KEXP DJs only played tracks longer than 6 minutes and 13 seconds, the length of Bob Dylan’s classic "Like a Rolling Stone." While the "Long Songs" programs are no longer available via the 14-day Streaming Archive, you can revisit them now using KEXP Remixed (beta).
