Scottish experimental indie rock trio Young Fathers released their acclaimed new album Cocoa Sugar in March. The genre-blending record went on to win the Scottish Album on the Year Award and continues the trio’s streak of impeccably made albums. Today, the band has shared a new single that shares the name of their recent album and was made during the Cocoa Sugar sessions but wasn’t included on the album.

Released as a special double A-side single alongside a David Wrench mix of “Border Girl,” “Cocoa Sugar” tells the story of a refugee father putting his child – whom he calls Cocoa Sugar – on a boat, saying his goodbyes. Or as Young Fathers’ Kayus Bankole - a refugee himself - describes the song in a press release: “a sweet lullaby for my cocoa sugar — my love. Stay warm, stay safe and goodbye.”

Young Fathers will play The Showbox on Friday, November 16. Listen to “Cocoa Sugar” and watch Young Fathers’ KEXP in-studio performance from 2014 below. Young Fathers will perform live on KEXP once again on Nov. 16.
