Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Deranged” from Chemtrails off their new EP, Headless Pin-Up Girl, released last week on PNKSLM Records.

Chemtrails – Deranged (MP3)Hailing from London, Chemtrails specialize in an incredibly pleasant degree of fuzzy, surf-tinged garage pop. Though the group has only been playing together for about a year, their instant buzz earned them a near immediate slot within the PNKSLM family.  Their gritty yet sunny output fits right into the Swedish label's roster of hip, lo-fi rock groups. Headless Pin-Up Girl, their recently released sophomore EP, secures them one step further into their polished, fun sound.

Today, we are featuring their track "Deranged", which disguises quite a deep topic with an unshakably cheery vibe. The song bursts open with some classic summertime chords, shortly thereafter met by an infectious, equally bright and boppy riff. Then comes their signature fuzzy King Tuff-esque vocals, which lead us into the real theme of the song: the fulfillment that comes when one stands their ground and takes firm control of their own path. The message is sent from bad-ass vocalist Mia Lust, who tells the story from her perspective as a transgender woman. The track glistens as the group showcases their keen harmonization skills, particularly in the ever-so catchy chorus. A song that could easily have been about romping around in the sun instead addresses an enlightening and empowering topic, and all the while Chemtrails never compromise their exuberant energy. They'll inspire you to dance it out AND take charge of your life at the same time! A winning combination, to say the least.

Unfortunately for us here in the US, they have yet to plan a tour across the Atlantic. Though we do have something to look forward to, as their debut LP is tentatively scheduled to release this Fall! Listen to their new EP, Headless Pin-Up Girl, and keep your eyes peeled to their Facebook page for all updates on their excitement. For now, check out their video of "Aeons" from their debut EP, Love in Toxic Wasteland:
