Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Always the Right Time" by ENTRANCE from the 2017 album Book of Changes on Thrill Jockey.ENTRANCE - Always the Right Time (MP3)"It's always the right time for love" - and it always has been, but given our current political climate, it's a message that can't be re-emphasized enough. On Book of Changes, his sixth album as either ENTRANCE or The Entrance Band, Baltimore's Guy Blakeslee - as if reminding us of this age-old truth - trades some of his psych-fueled indie-blues approach for more of a 60s sound (the times, they haven't been a-changin' enough!). His lyrics seek to intersect the public with the private, reminding us that how we treat each other individually is as important as when writ large. Case in point: today's featured song, "Always The Right Time", also the album's first single. Amid sweeping, lush orchestration, Blakeslee sings "Every time I see you, I fall in love", easily imagined as a fond message to a specific lover, yet in the video he features transgender actress Katherine Lyra Wakefield (a.k.a. Lyra Daydream) and serenades her as she completes some fairly routine domestic chores. Without political controversy (i.e. featuring a non-transgendered woman), viewers might not consider these scenes twice, but, alas, today we need to say aloud that we are all deserving of love. Of the video's message, Katherine Lyra Wakefield concurs:

Love is the only means we have to counteract hate and violence. More hate and violence will only make things worse. Through understanding and unconditional love there can be a larger “we,” a society that cares about the most vulnerable and forgets no one. We have the potential now more than ever. The movements in the 60s were amazing and inspiring but we have to go all the way this time. Love is more powerful than hate. Stay strong and when you’re tired, don’t give up. Lean on each other and keep going.

It will be another time for love when ENTRANCE arrives in Seattle this Sunday, April 9th, for a headlining performance at LoFi. Look for more information on that on his website and Facebook page, and, of course, watch the gorgeous video for "Always the Right Time" below.
