  • More new music from The Shins: stream the very Wilco-esque single "Mildenhall" below (frontman James Mercer is even singer lower than ever before). The band's fifth LP Heartworms will be out March 10th via Aural Apothecary/Columbia. Catch them at this year's Sasquatch! Music Festival, 5/26-5/28 at The Gorge in George, Washington. [ Pitchfork ]

  • We mentioned earlier this week, Animal Collective were on the verge of releasing The Painters, a companion EP to last year’s full-length Painting With. Alongside three previously unreleased tracks is a cover of "Jimmy Mack," a 1967 Top Ten hit for Martha & the Vandellas. Based on the band's love of '60s pop, we had a feeling this cover would be good. Listen below: [ Under the Radar ]

  • Legendary New Zealand band The Chills re-emerged a couple of years ago with Silver Bullets, their first full-length album in 19 years. And today, the break the silence to share their version of David Bowie's "Conversation Piece." The song was originally released as a b-side, but reappeared on the reissue of Bowie's self-titled LP in 1990. Listen below: [ Stereogum ]

  • And speaking of David Bowie, the documentary that the BBC aired on him last month is coming to HBO. David Bowie: The Last Five Years features rare interviews of the Thin White Duke, as well as archival footage from the creation of The Next Day, (Blackstar), and the musical, Lazarus. Documentarian Francis Whately shared a statement reading, "Looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to reexamine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change. HBO, whose global output the world admires, is a great channel to get this incredible documentary out to the US fans." No word on when it will air, but stay tuned. [ Consequence of Sound ]
