Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Juicy” by Radiation City from their recent album, Synesthetica, on Polyvinyl.

Radiation City - Juicy (MP3)

Though the rock n' roll highway is littered with casualties of intra-band relationships, Radiation City’s Lizzy Ellison and Cameron Spies refuse to be one of those statistics. Even as their romance began to crumble in 2013, the couple decided to carry on with the production and release of their third full-length album, 2016’s Synesthetica.

The album’s first single, “Juicy”, employs Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Riley Geare on drums, as well as John Vanderslice as producer. Succulent and subdued, “Juicy” feels like a sweet glide through a dream pop wonderland, with Ellison’s warm vocals mixing with cooler synth sounds in a St. Vincent-type fashion. Foreboding “woahs” fade into comforting “la-las,” and as winter turns to summer, listeners are encouraged to remember “a soothing song in a dry, dry desert.” "Juicy" feels like that very song.

Radiation City performed in Seattle last month and are currently on a European tour. Keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for any further updates and for more music. Also, look out for live videos from their KEXP session in the next couple of weeks. For now, enjoy the official video for “Juicy”:
