Seattle duo Crater - Ceci Gomez and Kessiah Gordon - stopped by for an in-studio, both to play us some tracks from their debut, Talk to Me so I Can Fall Asleep, and to talk to DJ Sharlese about drooling in their sleep and The Sims "Hot Date" Expansion Pack. Crater only emerged in 2014 to immediate acclaim - these two local women came out of nowhere with their own grunge-flavored sample-based rock, a thoroughly modern take on the best known artistic export of this city. They drift comfortably between pop and trip-hop while maintaining a distorted aesthetic, revealing a stylistic self-awareness that fits their lyrics: stories of millennial relationships spent behind cell phone screens, stoned lethargy, and a bit of Holden Caulfield-esque disinterest. All of this could paint an image of self-seriousness and coffee shop brooding, a notion that hilariously melts away when the two stop playing and start talking about their evenings watching Sims gameplay videos and their own sense of romantic desperation. Welcome to the world of Crater.
