Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “New Hampshire” by PWR BTTM from their 2016 single on Father/Daughter Records.

PWR BTTM - New Hampshire (MP3)Originally written for their 2015 debut LP, the KEXP favorite Ugly Cherries, PWR BTTM's ballad "New Hampshire," shows a moving, intimately detailed side of the band's trademark glitter punk. Written by the band's guitarist Ben Hopkins, "New Hampshire" reflects on the end of a love affair, focusing on the inevitability of change instead of getting bogged down in the sadness. In an interview with NPR, Hopkins wrote the track was written during a period of internal emotional unrest, the song eventually becoming "about greener grass." Starting just with Hopkins's ever-gorgeous voice and guitar, "New Hampshire" drifts along, drummer-guitarist Liv Bruce's voice joining Hopkins in a beautifully interwoven harmony, before the track comes to its inevitable end.

PWR BTTM will return to Seattle very soon, with a stop at the Vera Project on Saturday, November 5th, joined by Bellows and Lisa Prank. Check out their Facebook and Website for more information. In the meantime, check out the band's KEXP in-studio from earlier this year.
