Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Automatic” by Seattle group Timbre Barons from the 2015 self-released Timbre Barons EP.

Timbre Barons - Automatic (MP3)

Slender Means hasn't been a band since 2010, and the Seattle group's music is surprisingly hard to find online. Thankfully, the formation of the band Timbre Barons - a combination of Slender Means members Josh Dawson, Paul Pugliese and Eric Wennberg (also formerly of Young Evils) along with guitarist Aaron Fishbein - is making a lot of Slender Means fans happy. Timbre Barons current EP finds Dawson's unique vocals fronting a slightly heavier sound. The result is pleasantly reminiscent of Slender Means but that packs a weightier punch. Building riffs lead to skying choruses only to have the band hit the brakes, it's rock 'n roll that demonstrates tasteful restraint. Timbre Barons' potent combination is particularly evident on today's featured song, "Automatic". On it, rolling guitar riffs create a break neck pace for Dawson to croon over. Punching drums drop away to a grungy chorus only to pick up again and evolve into a frantic climax. It's ice cool and balances a rebellious spirit with a catchy sensibility. With the release of their second EP in January, Timbre Barons are just getting going, and if their music continues to emanate the spirit of "Automatic," it won't be long before they're a staple of the Seattle music scene.

You can find Timbre Barons playing several shows around Seattle in the forthcoming weeks, including June 27th at LoFi Performance Gallery, July 9th at Wine Rocks at Bell Harbor (proceeds go to University District Food Bank) and July 11th at the West Seattle Street Fair. Keep up with the band on their Facebook page and give their self titled EP a listen at their bandcamp.
