Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Leaper” by Beliefs, from the 2015 album Leaper on Hand Drawn Dracula.

Beliefs - Leaper (MP3)

Shoegaze is alive and well with Canadian band Beliefs. It comes as no surprise that the duo of Josh Korody and Jesse Crowe were united by their love of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth after intially meeting at a mutual friend's birthday party.

On the title track of their sophomore full-length, Leaper, the band push through the shimmering washes of reverb with their guy/girl harmonies, setting off a swoon with Kevin Shields-influenced guitar effects. A spoken-word part towards the end truly calls to mind Kim Gordon in "Kool Thing." If you're gonna wear your influences on your sleeve, might as well have the best influences. The album was produced and mixed by Korody from his own Candle Recording Studio in Toronto.

There are no upcoming dates for the band, but you can keep track of them on Twitter and Facebook. In the meanwhile, check out this video, directed by Adam Leon and featuring Jaclyn Walker and Andrew La Grave:
