This Saturday, October 10th, KEXP presents the Sixth Annual Reykjavik Calling at Neumos, a free showcase pairing artists from Iceland’s burgeoning music scene with your favorite Seattle musicians.
Local artist Briana Marela opens the show. Though based here in Seattle, she recorded her most recent album in Reykjavic, with Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers. The resulting full-length, All Around Us, out now on Jagjaguwar, captures the magic of Iceland infused with the Northwest's own beauty. We couldn't imagine a better way to kick off this evening!
Last year at Iceland Airwaves, we discovered DJ flugvél & geimskip (translated: DJ Airplane & Spaceship), who instantly charmed us with her kooky one-woman electronic experience. We've paired her up with SassyBlack, one half of Sub Pop duo THEESatisfaction, who is also known for her eccentric, experimental sounds. The resulting collaboration should be truly out-of-this-world.
Headlining the show will be Icelandic noise-rock quintet Mammút paired with Seattle's psychedelic Midday Veil. Mammút blew us away when we first discovered them at Iceland Airwaves in 2009, and Midday Veil are longtime KEXP faves who have just released their third full-length, which KEXP Music Director Don Yates calls, "a sleeker, more electronic-oriented approach... which seamlessly blends propulsive space-disco with ritualistic psych-rock."Admission to Seattle’s Reykjavik Calling is 21+ and FREE to the public until capacity is reached. Doors open at 8:00 PM. For more information, click here.

Each year, KEXP curates the bill, selecting likeminded artists whose complementary styles might lead to fruitful collaboration. This year, we made our choices with a min…

"Music" and "space" form an undeniable symbiosis. We use each word to describe the other all the time, yet in truth, the one cannot exist in the other. The only sound of the spheres is in our minds. But what great imaginations we have. Over the years, many sonic explorers have reached far into the …
