Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week, we’ll be featuring songs by local artists playing the 2015 Capitol Hill Block Party. Today’s song is “Bury Me Deep” by Ivan & Alyosha from the 2015 album It's All Just Pretend on Dualtone.

Ivan & Alyosha - Bury Me Deep (MP3)

Earnest folk-influenced melodies guide the incandescent indie rock of Seattle’s Ivan & Alyosha. Formed by Tim Wilson (lead vocals, guitar) and Ryan Carbary (guitar, piano), the project is named for characters in The Brothers Karamazov. A pair of EPs (2007’s The Verse, The Chorus and 2009’s Fathers Be Kind) grew local hype for the group, and gave them enough momentum to travel to Austin for a successful showing at SXSW 2010. The band’s full length debut, 2013’s All The Times We Had, only continued the band’s upward trajectory, and for their sophomore effort, the band – now comprised of Wilson, Carbary, bassist Pete Wilson, guitarist Tim Kim, and drummer Cole Mauro – entered the studio with Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, My Morning Jacket) to create their sophomore effort, It’s All Just Pretend. One of the hardest-charging tracks in the band's catalog, "Bury Me Deep" uses dark imagery and a thick, layered arrangement to channel Wilson's conflicted romanticism. Structured like a country tune and played with the bombast of a rock song, the band shifts from a driving momentum in the verses to crashing through the choruses, never losing an ounce of urgency. In between all of its musical muscle, "Bury Me Deep" cuts deepest when Wilson sounds nearly desperate, holding out for an answer (much less a positive one) and turning the song into one of Ivan & Alyosha's most compelling tracks to date.

Ivan & Alyosha are in the final stretch of a North American tour and will play the Capitol Hill Block Party Main Stage on Saturday, July 25, at 4:45PM. Find out who else is playing the CHBP here and keep up with Ivan & Alyosha on their website and Facebook page. Below, watch the band play "Bury Me Deep" recently at KEXP:
