Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "The Ones You Love" by The Fascination Movement from the 2015 self-released single.

The Fascination Movement - The Ones You Love (MP3)

Wrapped up in a cozy cocoon of silky 80’s sounds, Seattle’s The Fascination Movement have been slowly dripping out retro radness since 0.5, their 2008 debut EP. Filtering it through with a kind of relaxed, synthetic air that relies on renditions of old familiars (like New Order and OMD), the group has houned its sound over the years to become the perfect dose of sweet, soothing and beautifully bitter.

Today's featured song, "The Ones You Love", is this mysterious band's first single in three years. But as it kicks off with a fresh pair of kicks and snares, and morphs into a loose disco shuffle, while tastefully layering choral passages over gurgling synths, you realize they haven't lost their stride. The track is rife with melancholic melody and rolling percussion that unfolds quite gracefully around the ears with breathtaking dexterity. With its peaks and valleys of sound, this is the perfect montage music for any 80's romantic comedy. So, grab some microwave popcorn, pull up your leg warmers and tune in.

Live shows for The Fascination Movement are few and far between, so it's no surprise that they have no upcoming shows currently scheduled, but keep checking their website and Facebook page, as the (5 member?) band does occasionally play out. Otherwise, there's not a lot out there to share, so maybe head over to their Bandcamp page to check out a few of their older releases.
