While his previous release, Temple Beautiful, looked backwards, particularly at the storied past of San Francisco, Chuck Prophet's latest, Night Surfer (out today!), looks brazenly forward. But even if the future isn't always bright on this, his 13th album, the songs are characteristically punchy, well-crafted rockers, the kind you want to sing along to, even when they come from the voices of hard-luck cases and ne'er-do-wells in his dystopian landscape. And it's no wonder that the scrappiness of the characters appeal so much, as Chuck and his band are some of the hardest working artists on the road, cramming into their own Ford Econoline on the way from club to club. Fortunately for us, they made time between gigs for another stop at KEXP to share three new songs from Night Surfer and an old favorite:
