Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Did We Live Too Fast” by Got a Girl from the 2014 album I Love You but I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now on Bulk Recordings.

Got a Girl - Did We Live Too Fast (MP3)

You may not have heard of Got a Girl, but you know them. The duo includes singer and actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played the many-hued Ramona in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, when she met Got a Girl collaborator Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. Dan is known for his production work with the Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, and Handsome Boy Modeling School among others. This perhaps unlikely duo released their retro-inspired debut album, mercifully titled I Love You but I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now, in July. Their ritzy-60s-love affair aesthetic extends beyond their music; the two created a series of "product" advertisements as teasers for their album, endorsing Got a Girl Bubble Bath, Pinot Noir, Olive Oil, and Fragrance.

"Did We Live Too Fast" is a luxurious track, with Dan's hip hop background freshening up the duo's heavy 60s French pop influence. Winstead's voice is sultry and sweet, evoking the sound not only of French pop queens like France Gall, but of more contemporary vocalists like Beth Gibbons. This song would be right at home on an episode of Mad Men, amid the "vodka tonics," "leather-backed chairs," "plaza suites," and of course, romantic liaisons.

Connect with Got a Girl over Facebook and Twitter (maybe you can convince them to send you a bottle of that Pinot Noir). Watch their video for "Did We Live Too Fast," which I am convinced was filmed on the set of Bewitched, below.
