Brooklyn trio Dead Stars shine bright on their debut release, Slumber, an excellent collection of fuzzed-out '90s-style guitar rock. Formed in 2009 by Jeff Moore (guitar, vocals), his cousin Jaye Moore (drums), and John Watterberg (bass), the band had been self-releasing their music for years until New York label Uninhabitable Mansions stepped in to release their 2013 EP, High Gain. The five-song release caught the attention of Old Flame Records who released their first full-length earlier this summer.
In fact, today's Song of the Day was originally released in 2011 as the title-track of one of those aforementioned self-released EPs. With vocals reminiscent of '90s band HUM and the soaring, high-energy guitar sound of Superchunk, Dead Stars definitely capture the college rock sound in an exuberant way.
