Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Thrust” by Summer Aviation from their 2013 self-released EP, Elevator.

Summer Aviation - Thrust (MP3)

As their name might suggest, Summer Aviation aims to create bright, uplifting music, which contrasts the general grey malaise that their hometown of Seattle often offers its residents. This husband and wife duo of Kevin and Lee Kelly cite many inspirations for their songs, from The Carpenters to the Roger Nichols Trio to My Bloody Valentine and Burt Bacharach. Their music incorporates high “Ooos” and “Ahhs”, most often coming from the sweet-sounding Lee, while Kevin (formerly of The Melody Unit) offers most of the instrumentation, including jaunty guitar and synthesizer licks mixed with dream-pop rhythms. The band, which has been together since 2011, recently released their Elevator EP, a six-track thought-provoking sugar high of a record.

Their song “Thrust” entreats listeners to dance. Kevin’s lyrics are pushed back in the mix, providing a more protruding rhythm and musical melody. Your hips feel like they’re on a plane all their own and the vocals provide the sunshine landscape. As Kevin notes, “Over and over” we’re “together again, my love.” The music does not want to capture you, no – instead, it wants to lift you toward the sun with surprise, levity and a smile. Indeed, the entire new EP from Summer Aviation just wants to have a little fun.

While Summer Aviation does not have any tour dates on the books, you can check their Facebook page and Bandcamp site to stay on top of all they’re up to - including their plans for another upcoming record release!
