Founded in 2011 as an outlet for frontman Nathaniel Epp's songwriting, Canadian band Dead Soft have evolved over the years into the tight-knit alt-rock trio they are today. They've released a slew of singles on Infinity Cat (the Nashville-based record label founded by JEFF The Brotherhood) as well as self-released a debut LP and some EPs, but when it came time for their sophomore full-length, they knew they needed a change.
It's a scenario many Seattleites can relate to: they got priced out of their hometown of Vancouver and relocated to the British Columbian island of Gabriola. Epp explained in a press release:
“Living in Vancouver and doing any kind of musical endeavor like touring, or recording required so much work and sacrifice. There was a lot of time, energy and hope invested into those sessions, so when things went sideways the way they did it was really crushing. In the wake of that [founding member and bassist] Keeley and I made the decision to tear down the life we were living and move to a remote community in a bit of a leap of faith scenario. We dealt with a lot of uncertainty but worked really hard to figure out a new life that we wanted, and the increase in time and money that the new life has provided us allowed the album to really take on a life of its own. The struggles and growth were happening while we were creating the album and began to seep into the music. It became a record about our search for peace.”
Named for the deep blue glow of their forest-covered home at sunset, Big Blue marks their first release with renowned label Arts & Crafts. For today's Song of the Day, Epp told Stereogum:
This song is about trusting that you will get to where you’re going. It was written at a time when I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I didn’t know what that change would look like but I could feel it coming and braced myself with the fact that truth and love will prevail in the end.
