Led by songwriting siblings Jack and Lily Wolter, Brighton-based band Penelope Isles create some delightful '90s-indie-rock-fused dream-pop on their debut LP Until the Tide Creeps In. “It's cool to have two songwriters in the band because I love her songs so much!” Jack exclaims via a press release. Upon returning from university, he discovered his sister's newfound talents. “By the time I moved home Lily was not so much of an annoying younger sister anymore and had grown up and started playing in bands and writing songs. We soon became very close. I had written some songs, so we started a band called Your Gold Teeth. We toured a bit and then Lily left for Brighton to study songwriting. A couple of years later I moved down and we started Penelope Isles together.”
For today's Song of the Day, Jack told Stereogum:
“Gnarbone” was conceived a few years back whilst living and recording in a tiny cubpboard bedroom in a friend’s house in Falmouth, Cornwall. It’s funny thinking how the song has grown so big sonically, considering how small that space was! I was daydreaming about the uncertain future with a life of making music and the decision to try, falling in love and hoping to get good at surfing again. I always knew “Gnarbone” would exist and come to life when i found the right people to play it with me.
