Kanye West: Yeezus
Buy! - (Def Jam)
This Chicago rapper/producer's sixth solo album finds him dramatically shifting his sound to something much more hard, cold and brutal, incorporating elements of Chicago acid house and drill rap, along with industrial, dancehall and other aggressive dance styles. With help from the likes of Daft Punk (who co-produced four of the album's ten songs), Hudson Mohawke and Arca along with super-producer Rick Rubin, Yeezus is a lean, mean, fighting machine, with malevolent sci-fi synths, throbbing beats, sampled screams and ominous dancehall toasting accompanying West's incendiary raps. The first half of the album is simply stunning, but the second half is more erratic, with tossed-off lyrics that sometimes offer little beyond shock value. That said, it's still one of the year's most exciting musical listens. 6/21/2013 - Don Yates
