Chan Marshall dramatically transforms her sound on her latest Cat Power album with some of the brightest and boldest music of her career. Recorded almost entirely by herself, Sun features a synth-heavy sound driven by a propulsive blend of drums and electronic rhythms, with her smoky vocals layered and treated. The songs are also some of her most confident-sounding and forward-looking, addressing past traumas but with a determined eye aimed towards better days ahead. 8/31/2012
