- (A Major Label)
This Canadian singer-songwriter is revered for his impressive catalog of hard-bitten tales chronicling the struggles of working-class folks. His 18th album is not only his best in quite awhile, it ranks with his finest work. While he’s still focused on blue-collar concerns, his new album centers around issues of faith, and he does it with a dark, edgy and beat-driven Waitsian sound that’s similar to what he achieved with his landmark Lipstick Lies & Gasoline album, but with a more primitive, backwoods gospel feel. Powerful stuff. 5/20/2008
