- (Warp)
This British band’s sound shares some similarities with the angular, New Wave-influenced art-pop of the Futureheads, but they’re distinguished by the more prominent use of keyboards (along with the buzzing guitars) while also being unafraid to show plenty of heart-on-sleeve emotion. Still, what counts most is the abundance of first-rate songs combining structural complexity and catchy hooks with passion-filled performances. A Certain Trigger is not only an excellent debut album – it’s also one of the high points of the new New Wave. 5/23/2005
