Bobby Bare Jr. is one of the best songwriters to emerge from the alt-country scene, and judging by his latest album, he just keeps getting better. Featuring songs about touring, the music scene and often-dysfunctional relationships, Bobby sings about what he knows best. And while those topics have inspired plenty of forgettable albums through the years, he brings a fresh spin to it all thanks to a wicked sense of humor and a restless musical creativity. The songs are a uniformly strong bunch spiked with loads of memorable hooks, incorporating rock, country, soul, classic pop and more into an expansive, eclectic sound that includes the prominent use of a punchy horn section. A remarkable achievement that's sure to be recognized as one of the best albums of the year. 6/8/2004
