The much-anticipated follow-up to her incredibly successful debut album doesn’t disappoint. While not radically different from Come Away With Me, there’s more variance in tempo and energy, along with a noticeably stronger roots-music bent: Country and soul were present in the torchy jazz-pop of her debut, but this time they’re more upfront in the arrangements, melodies and Jones’s own heavenly vocals. Nice covers of Townes Van Zandt and Tom Waits, along with a bunch of cool rootsy originals, including a swell bluegrass-flavored duet with Dolly Parton.—Don Yates 2/2/2004
