Appropriately titled, Gillian Welch's second album is much more stark and forbidding than her acclaimed debut. All but one song feature just Gillian and her guitar-playing partner David Rawlings (producer T-Bone Burnett plays keyboards on "Whiskey Girl"). Most of these songs(all Welch/Rawlings originals) sound like they could've been written decades (or even centuries) ago, and yet their themes are as relevant as ever. 7/15/1998
