There hasn’t been anyone quite like Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet), before or since. While the Captain’s audacious and wholly original blend of avant-garde jazz, delta blues, and lyrical surrealism in a rock-band context has influenced countless other musical artists, his own music has never attained any great degree of popularity. This excellent 2-CD retrospective may get him some well-deserved attention, but I’ve a feeling this stubbornly idiosyncratic artist could care less – he walked away from music in the early ‘80s and has never looked back.
