Over a year removed from Chris Cornell’s death, it’s still a hard truth to take in that we won’t see or hear the legendary Soundgarden frontman perform again. But today, the singer’s estate revealed a previously unreleased song “When Bad Does Good” – the first offering from a forthcoming self-titled, four-disc box set spanning Cornell’s career out Nov. 16 via UMG/Universal. You can listen to the track below.

It’s hard not to listen to “When Bad Does Good” and not think of Cornell’s untimely end. Over the hum of an organ, his iconic voice bellow, “Standing beside an open grave/Your fate decided/ Your life erased/Your final hour/Has come today/Lit by the fire/Of your temples burning.” The song feels akin to a spiritual or a hymn; an eerie and emotional look back at the end of a life. His voice bellows and reaches upward in only the way Cornell could.

The song itself is the first of many new tracks we’ll hear on the upcoming Chris Cornell box set. Cornell’s wife Vicky was instrumental in organizing the massive project, working with his Soundgarden bandmates to curate the collection along with longtime Cornell producer Brendan O’Brien. Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament also helped solidify the packaging for the set. Reportedly it was Cornell’s friend actor Josh Brolin who brought “When Bad Does Good” specifically to Vicky’s attention.

The collection isn’t limited to just Cornell’s solo work and includes material from Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, and collaborations with legendary guitarists Slash, Santana, and The Civil Wars’ Joy Williams. There will also be a truncated single disc version. Check out the entire tracklist below.
