Bob Dylan: The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 (The Bootleg Series Vol. 9)
Buy! - (Columbia/Legacy)
The latest volume in Dylan's Bootleg Series is a 2-CD set of demo recordings he made for the song publishing company M. Witmark & Sons (along with a handful of ones he made initially for Leeds Music) over a two-and-a-half year span from 1962-64 at the very beginning of his career. Presented in chronological order, the demos document Dylan's remarkable early evolution from a raw, but obviously gifted young songwriter and performer to a transcendent, hugely influential cultural figure who revolutionized American popular songwriting. These demos feature Dylan solo. mostly on acoustic guitar and harmonica, though occasionally on piano. Even in such spartan settings, he is a magnetic performer, whether running through an early version of a soon-to-be classic song or documenting other ones that didn't make it onto any of his official albums, though just about all of them stand fine on their own. 10/22/2010 - Don Yates
