As Seattle continues to mourn the passing of rock legend David Bowie, several events have been popping up around town to celebrate his rich career. This Wednesday, February 3rd, the Northwest Film Forum will host a screening of Bowie's 1976 cinematic debut, The Man Who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg.
If you haven't seen this movie before, you're in for a treat. Bowie plays an extraterrestrial -- yes, it's the role he was born to play! Adopting the human name "Thomas Jerome Newton," he arrives on Earth to collect water for his home planet. Before long, he finds himself with a corporate job and a girlfriend, but with no way to make it home. Though it received mixed reviews upon its release (none other than Roger Ebert ranked it only 2½ stars), the sci-fi surrealism and performance of a young Bowie has since made it a cult favorite.At 6:30 PM, local musicians Tenderfoot, Lori Goldston, and fill-in KEXP DJ Sean Nelson will perform Bowie covers before the screening. The film starts at 7:30 PM, with an introduction from Nelson, who is also the Arts Editor for The Stranger. Tickets are on sale online, and (if there are any leftover) will be available at the door.
