Song of the Day: Domenico - Cine Privê

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Today's selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, comes from Brazilian artist Domenico. "Cine Privê" is the title track from his 2012 release of the same name, out now on Plug Research.

You may know Domenico Lancellotti from the Brazilian samba band The +2's. They get their name from the way they've named their records over the past decade or so. 2000's Musical Typewriter by Moreno +2, 2003's Sincerely Hot by Domenico +2, and 2007's Futurismo by Kassin +2. Moreno, Domenico, and Kassin appear on all three, but primary writing responsibilities were credited to the named member on each. 3 albums later, the +2's gave us some excellent samba music with traditional heart and a progressive edge that made it accessible even for those relatively unfamiliar with the genre. This year, Domenico has graced us with a new offering. Cine Privê, meaning Private Cinema, strays slightly from the samba sound of the +2's. By himself, Domenico gives us a warm, balanced mixture of Brazilian sounds and soothing textures, making Cine Privê one of the most refreshing records of the year.

The title track, "Cine Privê", kicks the album off with a bright soundtrack to a warm, Brazilian afternoon. A strong drum groove flows throughout, while subtle textures and noises flutter in and out like a drive through the city. There are cool coffee house guitars and jazzy basslines to guide the way, but then Domenico's soundscape of synthesizers, organ, and bird noises creates a whirlwind of chill. All the while, his soft doubled Portuguese whispers will steal your heart effortlessly. "Cine Privê" is without a doubt one of the strongest offerings on the record and (we hope) will entice you to listen further into this excellent record.
