KEXP is excited to present a free education program teaching youth the art of music curation and radio. Working with KEXP DJs, young music-lovers will gain knowledge and training in music curation, board operation, physical and digital asset management, mentorship, and basic broadcast DJing skills. Youth will also gain insight into non-commercial public community radio with classes taking place right here at the KEXP studio.
Students who complete the full training will join a cohort of rotating hosts for KEXP’s youth show 90.TEEN.
Youth ages 15-18 with a passion for music.
Fully-funded six-week instruction
$30 for each show aired on KEXP
One on one mentorship from KEXP DJs
-Youth ages 15-18
-Open to learning new things and refining them
-Access to Wi-Fi
-Has a working computer (if not, KEXP will work to provide one)
-Works well with others
-Passionate about music, sharing music and discovering new music.
-Shows enthusiasm and commitment for creative projects
-Shows interest in curation
-Able to commit to 5 hours per week for in-class learning and homework, and three 30-minute one-on-one mentorship sessions.
-Class start date: Thursday, September 1st and class is held on every week on Thursdays
-Time: 4:30pm - 6:30pm PST
-Class end date: Thursday, October 6th
Students who complete the full training will join a cohort of rotating hosts for KEXP’s youth hosted show 90.TEEN. The first show will air on Saturday, October 15th at 6:00 AM PST on KEXP.
*Program with cohort will end in May 2023 with shows airing through June 2023.

Applicants must live in or near the Seattle-Tacoma metro area and able to travel to KEXP studios.

KEXP’s current COVID policy requires visitors to provide proof of vaccination and wear a face mask while in group settings. KEXP will provide an attestation form to record a student’s vaccination status and can provide a high-quality, fitted mask if a student needs one. The first week of class will be on Zoom, all other classes will be onsite. Any one-on-one teaching will require a mask. Students will be able take their mask off in situations where they are working alone.
