The veteran soul singer’s first regular studio album in 18 years is a masterful set of electro-soul co-produced by Damon Albarn and XL Recordings’ Richard Russell (who also produced Gil Scott-Heron’s last album I’m New Here). They provide him with a moody, electronic-oriented sound combining atmospheric synths with trip-hop beats, and their spacious, modern production makes a surprisingly effective showcase for Womack’s grainy, deeply soulful vocals and new songs of spiritual struggles and triumphs that he co-wrote with Albarn and Russell along with his longtime songwriting partner Harold Payne. 6/8/2012
