- (Barsuk)
While the last album from Seattle’s David Bazan (2009’s powerful Curse Your Branches) found him grappling with personal issues of faith and dependence, his latest looks outward at a dysfunctional culture consumed by greed, cruelty and apathy with a typically strong set of dark, probing songs. The album’s bleak themes are somewhat leavened by a mostly uptempo, more cohesive basic rock sound fostered by using his regular touring band in the studio for the first time. 5/2/2011
