- (Mexican Summer)
This LA duo’s debut album is a nearly perfect set of hazy, lo-fi beach-pop with roots in ‘60s girl groups, surf, ‘50s doo wop, the Ramones and Blondie. The band’s summery sound combines fuzzy, reverbed guitars with bouncy rhythms, sunny harmonies and strong, yearning melodies. Bethany Cosentino’s brassy vocals are strong and clear, and while her lyrics are often simple, their emotional directness is part of the charm as she obsesses about boys, along with weed, TV and her cat. Crazy For You is the perfect summertime soundtrack, and one of the year’s best albums. 7/30/2010
