On her 4th album, this Brooklyn-based soul singer continues to edge away from the rawer funk and soul of her earlier releases, with a greater percentage of songs featuring a lighter, more Motown-influenced sound distinguished by more layered production, a wider range of instrumentation and backing vocals. As with previous releases, nearly all of the songs were written by members of her acclaimed band the Dap-Kings, who show yet again that they’re equally as adept at writing great soul songs as they are at playing them. 4/2/2010
