The Secret History: The World That Never Was
Buy! - (Le Grand Magistery)
This New York-based band formed out of the ashes of My Favorite, but while the latter was more synth-pop oriented, The Secret History features a tougher, more guitar-based sound for their literate, impeccably crafted pop songs (all of them written or co-written by former My Favorite frontman Michael Grace Jr.). Keyboards are still in the mix, but it’s Darren Amadio’s thick guitar lines that usually drive the band’s sound. Another big difference is featured singer Lisa Ronson (daughter of longtime David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson), and her sweet, plaintive vocals add greater emotional depth to the material. It all adds up to an impressive debut album of melancholy, lyrically revealing indie-pop in the vein of the Smiths. 4/2/2010 - Don Yates
