- (Vagrant)
No longer on a major label, the former Replacements frontman moves away from the polished adult pop of his recent solo releases for two new musically distinct albums packaged together. Both of them reflect a more raw approach to music-making: Stereo is the sparser album, full of melancholy, heart-tugging ballads showcasing some of his stronger melodies, while Mono (recorded under the pseudonym of Grandpaboy) uses a full band and is closer to the rowdy spirit of the Replacements, though less punk and more Stones/Faces bar-band raunch. It all adds up to his strongest release in quite some time. 4/15/2002
